Many communities across Canada have co-operative food buying programs. When people combine their purchasing power, they are often able to obtain better prices. I encourage everyone to participate. Participation not only helps your budget, but keeps prices down for those who are on extremely tight budgets.
Advantages
- Great for busy people with no time to shop
- Savings for your grocery budget
- Local produce used wherever possible.
- Free delivery in some areas.
- Introduced to new produce with recipes.
Contact your local health unit or social services agency to find your closest program. Some programs such as that run by the Peterborough YWCA, offer subsidies for those in greater need. Please add a link to your local food co-op in the comments below.
